Dating?

Colin came to my office because his fiancée had just been diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis. Though he described his fiancée as meeting his 'standards' in all other respects, that she was the best girlfriend he had ever had, the M.S. diagnosis was a deal breaker. He broke the engagement with her as they left the doctor's office. Apparently (!) she was devastated.

HEAT WAVE!

This heat is ridiculous! I would like to be happy about the opportunity to wear my seldom used sundresses...but enough already.

Sometimes a Cigar...

When you think it's butter but it's not, it's Chiffon.

tag line in 1970's margarine commercial

  • At the end of my massage, the room is twilight-dark, my vision blurred and doubled. It's only 2 o'clock in the afternoon. Apparently I'm going blind.

Oops, I did it again - Falling redux

Approaching the park I think, 'I've got this walking thing down! Time to get back to running.' Hardly a beat and I'm flying into a 'tuck and roll' on the very same piece of sidewalk that I encountered more violently 2 years ago. No blood this time, a prettier landing, and a quicker recovery. But still.

Too Darn Hot!! Global Broiling

It's over 90 degrees in the City by the Bay, famous for its fog and wintry summers. Over 90 in my Sunset neighborhood, reputed to be perpetually fogbound and cold even during a heat wave. This particular 'wave' has been going on for several days and shows no respect for neighborhood boundaries.

Acceptance???

"You can tell me anything, but don't tell me I have M.S." Those were my first words to my new neurologist in 2004.

Fatigue & Spoon Theory

I really didn't get it until I got it.

In my 20's, I worked full-time in an office, headed for the dance studio for 4 to 6 hours of class and rehearsal, then, often as not, to a club to continue dancing. This did not seem extreme at the time. This was living my life. Sure I was tired, even fatigued at times, but  the solutions were simple: another cup of coffee, some jumping jacks, brushing my hair over my head-I was good to go!

M.S. fatigue is different.

Sometimes it's not about getting high! MS & MJ

Early in my diagnosis a well-meaning friend cheerfully announced, "Hey, cannabis works for MS! You should try it!"

Unfortunately he couldn't tell me what he meant by it working. A cure? Doubtful. Pain? I didn't have pain. Spasticity? Again, not my symptom.

My old memories of pot aligned all too closely with the most troublesome MS symptoms that I did have: fatigue, cognitive impairment, coordination issues, depression.

BRAVE

"You are the bravest person I know," a visiting friend told me after I cursed and whined my way through my daily injection. 'Brave' was not the word that came to my mind. Surely 'brave' doesn't swear or whimper. It's prettier and far more polite.

Boiling Frogs and Beautiful Music

A frog will stay in slowly heating water until it's too late to jump to safety.
